in the Pinelands
A
number of excellent museums and Interpretive Centers throughout the
Pinelands and surrounding coastal areas offer a fascinating look at
the history of this part of New Jersey. Here are just some of the many
places you can visit.

Burlington
County Prison Museum
This building was
a prison for 154 years. At the time of its closing it was the oldest
continually used prison in the United States.

Museum
at Historic Batsto Village
Located within the Wharton State forest in Burlington County, Batsto
is a wonderful restoration of a nineteenth century bog iron and
glass-making village. Its
museum displays many artifacts relating to Batsto's history, as
well as the rich ecological background.

Barnegat
Lighthouse Interpretive Center
The “Story of Barnegat
Lighthouse,” depicting the history of this beloved landmark, is
showcased in the Interpretive Center at Barnegat Lighthouse State
Park, which is adjacent to the lighthouse.

Barnegat
Historical Society - Heritage Village and Museum
New
Jersey, Heritage Village features the Lippincott-Faulkenburg House,
the Barber Shop, the Edwards House, the Butcher Shop, a corn crib,
a motel cabin, and a three-hole necessary. Heritage Village is
open from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturdays, from Memorial Day through
Labor Day.

The Powhatan Renape Nation's
American
Indian Heritage Museum
A wide variety of artifacts,
from tools and musical instruments, to clothing, weapons, and
decorative arts. Large dioramas throughout depict the village
life of many tribes.

Tuckerton
Seaport
The museum
on site has an extensive display of decoy collections, Baymen's
tools and artifacts, and an antique photo collection among its
offerings. Sundays usually feature a live demonstation of wood
carving or other art of the Baymen. Tours, clinics,
hands-on demonstrations and much more will educate and entertain
everyone! See photos.

Over
20,000 items ranging in size from a Continental dollar to an 1870
bed. All have been presented to the Center as gifts from members
and friends. The majority of items are classified as "historical
artifacts" rather than antiques. These artifacts can be attributed
by name, place, and date to the persons who made them, used them,
or enjoyed owning them.
