FIRE IN THE PINES 4 /19/08

April 19, 2008; 3:43PM: There is a forest fire on or near West Bay Avenue, west of Heritage Point. I was told that the fire jumped the street, but that is unconfirmed. If anyone has details, please EMAIL or PHONE me at 609-698-2501 so I can post them here. I will be posting the photos I was able to take before being told to turn back by the Barngat Police. They have closed West Bay Ave. WEST of Nautilus Drive, and traffic is already building.

4:15PM: A walk to West Bay Ave showed the roadway still closed beyond Nautilus Drive, but traffic is light. From my rear yard, smoke seems to have diminished somewhat. I hear choppers and planes in the area.

4:56PM: All is quiet. Hopefully the fire was brought under control quickly - thanks to the many fire departments that responded! I saw trucks from Ship Bottom (Long Beach Island), Tuckerton and Warren Grove. Many more drove by but I couldn't get the localities they were from. This potentially explosive fire seems to have been stopped in its infancy because of the fast response time of these volunteers!

Once again, thank you to the volunteer firefighters!

5:40PM: I just drove up West Bay Ave. to the Heritage Point area. Police are now allowing local traffic pass, but the road is still blocked where the fire apparently jumped the road, about a quarter mile beyond Heritage Point. There was NO SIGN OF SMOKE, so hopefully, this will be my last post on this fire!

The Pine Barrens is becoming a popular tourist destination. It offers history, nature, boating, camping, fishing, swimming, and most of all, peace and tranquility. It's important to families who live here, whether for a few years or many generations, that our peace and tranquility be preserved.A local lawyer or doctor won't look any different than his neighbor who works the land. Thousand dollar suits aren't what impress people of the Pines - taking care of nature and fellow man is what matters. To that end, it is important for you to know that as a visitor to our precious Pine Barrens, you should show respect for the flora and fauna, for the historical buildings or their remains, and show respect for the "locals". Walk and drive gently. Treat our Pine Barrens as you would want a visitor to treat your own home town - and your own family. Thank you.
